When to Contact Your Doctor

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms during your dexamethasone taper:

Severe headache accompanied by stiff neck or fever Increased difficulty breathing or shortness of breath Rapid or irregular heartbeat Severe abdominal pain or vomiting Sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in 24 hours) Severe muscle weakness or tremors Increased anxiety or confusion Unusual bruising or bleeding Skin changes, such as rashes or lesions

Also, call your doctor if you have any concerns about your symptoms or the tapering process. Don’t hesitate to reach out; open communication ensures your comfort and safety.

Managing Side Effects

Many individuals experience manageable side effects during dexamethasone tapering. However, persistent or worsening side effects warrant a call to your doctor. These include increased blood sugar levels, increased appetite and weight gain, mood changes, insomnia and increased risk of infection. Your doctor can offer advice and potentially adjust your treatment plan.

Missed Doses

Never double up on your dexamethasone dose. If you miss a dose, contact your physician for guidance on how to proceed. Following the prescribed schedule is paramount.
