Sudden appearance of floaters–tiny specks or strands that drift across your vision–is a major red flag. These are often described as cobwebs or flies. Don’t ignore them; a sudden increase in their number warrants immediate attention.
Flashing lights, similar to camera flashes, are another key symptom. These brief, bright bursts of light in your peripheral vision can indicate retinal tearing.
Visual Field Changes
A curtain or shadow descending over part of your vision is a serious warning sign. This can affect one eye or both and often starts in the periphery (side) of your vision. This visual impairment can be gradual or appear suddenly.
Blurred Vision
While blurred vision can have various causes, it’s crucial to note that it can also be an early sign of retinal detachment, particularly if combined with other symptoms mentioned above. Don’t assume it’s just eye strain.
If you experience any combination of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical to preserving your vision.
