Lactulose Dosage for Children: Considerations and Precautions

Always consult your pediatrician before giving lactulose to a child. Dosage depends heavily on the child’s age and weight. Generally, infants may receive 2.5-10 mL daily, while older children may need 15-30 mL daily. This is just a guideline, and your doctor will determine the correct amount for your child.

Administer lactulose with juice or other palatable liquids to improve taste. Never give lactulose undiluted; it may cause stomach upset. Observe your child for any adverse reactions, including diarrhea or abdominal cramping. If these occur, reduce the dosage or stop use and contact your doctor immediately.

Lactulose’s effects can take a day or two to become apparent. Be patient and follow your doctor’s instructions. If constipation persists despite using lactulose as directed, seek medical advice. It’s possible that underlying conditions require additional evaluation and treatment.

Children with galactosemia should not take lactulose. Also, inform your doctor about any other medications your child is taking, as interactions may occur. Regularly monitor your child’s bowel movements to determine the appropriate dosage and ensure effectiveness.

Store lactulose at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Always check the expiration date before use. Regularly reassess the need for lactulose with your physician; long-term use may not be necessary.
