Identifying Expired Benadryl: Visual and Physical Clues

Check the expiration date printed on the Benadryl packaging. This is the most reliable indicator of expiry.

Visual Inspection

Examine the pills or liquid carefully. Look for any discoloration; expired Benadryl might appear darker or differently colored than usual. Also, check for unusual texture changes; the pills may crumble easily or the liquid may become cloudy or separate.

Physical Examination

Smell the medication. A strong, unusual, or off-putting odor suggests spoilage. Taste a tiny amount of the liquid (if applicable) – if the taste is noticeably different, discard it. Never ingest a significant amount to test for spoilage.

Signs of Degradation

If the packaging is damaged or compromised in any way – tears, punctures, or loose seals – discard the medication. Also, observe the container. Swelling or bulging indicates internal pressure build-up due to degradation, necessitating disposal.

When in Doubt, Throw it Out

If you have any doubts about the Benadryl’s freshness, err on the side of caution and discard it. Using expired medication can be ineffective and potentially harmful.
