Dosage and Administration of a 10 mg Cardizem Bolus

A 10 mg Cardizem (diltiazem) bolus is administered intravenously over 2 minutes. Always verify the order with the prescribing physician before administering the medication.

Dilution and Administration

Dilute the 10 mg dose in 10 mL of compatible intravenous solution, such as 5% dextrose in water or normal saline. Administer the diluted solution slowly, over a 2-minute period, using an intravenous infusion pump for controlled delivery. Closely monitor the patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, and rhythm during and after administration.

Monitoring Vital Signs

Continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is recommended, especially during and immediately following the bolus injection. Observe for hypotension, bradycardia, heart block, and other adverse effects. Be prepared to manage these complications, which may require intervention.

Post-Administration Care

After administering the bolus, continue monitoring vital signs for at least 1 hour. Regular blood pressure checks are crucial. Report any significant changes in the patient’s condition to the attending physician. Document the administration time, dose, and any observed reactions.

Precautions

A 10 mg Cardizem bolus is a powerful medication. Use caution in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function, sick sinus syndrome, second or third-degree atrioventricular block (unless a pacemaker is in place), or hypotension. Always review patient-specific contraindications and potential drug interactions before administering the medication.
