Potential Side Effects of Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin, while generally safe and effective, can cause side effects. The most common are diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These usually are mild and resolve without treatment. However, severe diarrhea could indicate Clostridium difficile infection, requiring immediate medical attention.

Less frequent, but still possible, are allergic reactions ranging from mild skin rashes to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, or dizziness. Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of these.

Amoxicillin can also affect your gut flora, potentially leading to yeast infections (thrush) in the mouth or vagina. Symptoms include white patches in your mouth or vaginal itching and discharge.

In rare cases, amoxicillin may cause more serious side effects such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or unusual bleeding or bruising. These indicate potential liver or blood problems and require prompt medical evaluation.
