Potential Side Effects and Precautions When Taking Doxycycline for Malaria

Doxycycline, while effective against malaria, can cause side effects. Common ones include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and heartburn. These usually are mild and resolve without treatment. Drink plenty of water with each dose to minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Sun Sensitivity

Doxycycline increases your sun sensitivity. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use high SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 30) when outdoors, even on cloudy days. Wear protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses.

Medication Interactions

Doxycycline interacts with certain medications. Inform your doctor about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies, you are taking. This includes antacids, which can reduce doxycycline absorption. Take doxycycline at least two hours before or after taking antacids.

Other Potential Side Effects

Less common, but more serious, side effects include increased pressure in the skull, yeast infections, and esophageal irritation. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe headache, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, or vaginal itching. Also, contact your doctor if you develop unusual bruising or bleeding.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Doxycycline should generally be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult your doctor to discuss alternative malaria prevention methods if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Allergies

If you have a known allergy to tetracyclines, including doxycycline, avoid this medication. Tell your doctor about any previous allergic reactions to antibiotics before starting treatment.
