While generally safe, amoxicillin can cause serious, albeit rare, side effects. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following: severe allergic reactions, including difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or hives; jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); unusual bleeding or bruising; severe diarrhea; or seizures. These symptoms indicate a potentially life-threatening condition requiring prompt medical intervention.
Serious Allergic Reactions
Amoxicillin allergy is a significant concern. Symptoms can range from mild skin rash to anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis manifests as difficulty breathing, sudden drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. If you’ve experienced an allergic reaction to penicillin or similar antibiotics in the past, inform your doctor before taking amoxicillin.
Other Serious Side Effects
Although less common, amoxicillin can affect the liver, causing jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) and liver inflammation (hepatitis). Serious blood disorders, like agranulocytosis (a significant decrease in white blood cells), can also occur. These conditions demand immediate medical attention. Report any concerning symptoms, such as persistent fatigue, unexplained fever, or easy bruising, to your healthcare provider immediately.
