Viral pink eye, or viral conjunctivitis, usually clears up on its own within a week or two. Rest is key; get plenty of sleep to support your body’s natural healing process.
Cool compresses applied to your eyes several times a day can soothe irritation and reduce swelling. Simply soak a clean washcloth in cool water, wring it out, and gently apply it to your closed eyelids for 10-15 minutes.
Artificial tears, available over-the-counter, lubricate your eyes, relieving dryness and discomfort. Follow the product instructions for usage.
Maintain meticulous hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before touching your eyes. Avoid touching your face to prevent spreading the infection.
Discard used tissues immediately and avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or eye makeup with others to contain the spread of the virus.
While antiviral medications aren’t typically prescribed for viral pink eye, consult your doctor if symptoms worsen, persist for more than two weeks, or if you experience significant vision changes, severe pain, or a high fever. They can rule out other conditions and offer appropriate advice.
