Prednisone can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb calcium, increasing your risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, ensure you consume at least 1200mg of calcium daily. Prioritize calcium-rich foods like dairy products (yogurt, cheese, milk), leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach), fortified cereals and juices. If dietary intake is insufficient, discuss calcium supplements with your doctor.
Vitamin D’s Crucial Role
Vitamin D aids calcium absorption. Prednisone can also reduce vitamin D levels. Aim for 600-800 IU of vitamin D daily through sunlight exposure (safe amounts), vitamin D-rich foods (salmon, egg yolks), or supplements. Your physician can recommend the appropriate dosage based on blood tests measuring your vitamin D levels. Regular blood tests monitoring calcium and vitamin D levels are recommended while on prednisone.
